Moving the Goalposts

Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio explaining what looks to be a poor crop of new Republican office-seekers in '06:
[Candidates] aren't stupid. They see the political landscape. You are asking them to make a huge personal sacrifice. It's a lot easier to make that sacrifice if you think there's a rainbow at the end.
Remember when the goal used to lie at the end of the rainbow? In today's America, it seems, the rainbow itself suffices. Ah, the soft bigotry of low expectations.
